I don’t really mix it up with grabs that much. Most have come from skating and what they’re throwing around is miles from what we have to deal with. Like, a moving hunk of water and six feet of fiberglass. I mean, you can grab if it gets you hot but plenty look and feel awkward. I like my standard airs: the double grab, the normal frontside grab and the Indy. This past week I’ve been surfing on the mid-north coast of New South Wales filming with Jack McCoy for Andy Irons’ new vid Blue Horizon. It’s strange. I normally do at least one air a session. The waves we were surfing were fun and usually I’d be punting like mad. This time I was racing along the waves, thinking about what tricky stuff I could get going on, but I couldn’t make a thing. I’d be spending time on carves and hacks and then I’d go for airs and I wasn’t over my board enough and everything felt weird.
The only thing not on this page is the double grab, which is pretty obvious, and the Superman. It feels so surreal to be flying through the air with your legs kicked out. But it happens way quicker than what you think. You don’t get as much time in the air as a dirtbike rider or a BMX guy so you just quickly kick your legs out and try and get the board back under your feet in time. In theory it’s simple, but it really is complicated. The best thing is to try ’em off the back of the wave and practise landing back on your board. Here are the rest of the grabs so you know what they’re all about. Music… |
