Taj Burrow, 24, rocketed to flavor in the late ’90s, this flash air punk contrasting with the grim contest machines Australian surfing was pumping out of its schools and clubs. The child of American parents who’d relocated to the heavy-breaking reefs of Western Australia’s south-west, Taj somehow managed to develop an aerial-based repertoire inspired by the Momentum generation of Slater, Dorian and Machado. Taj (named after blues singer Taj Mahal by his guitar-mad dad) started surfing in 1985, aged seven. Two years later, the nine-year-old showed his awesome potential when he won the under-18 division of a local event.
Taj created a stir in 1997 when he qualified for the premier WCT tour, only to turn it down so he could further tune his act on the lower-rungs of the qualifying series. Taj joined the ’CT in 1999, finishing second in his first year and winning the rookie of the year award by miles. TB lists his interests as jetskis, cars, music, females and casinos, has already released two profile movies and uses a language that’s unique to he and his friends. You’ll know it soon…
